April is Foot Health Awareness Month

Dr. Jason Grossman, Dr. Paul A. Osemene, and the Advanced Feet and Ankle Care staff celebrate Foot Health Awareness Month in April. They are excited to take this opportunity to increase awareness around some of the most common conditions that bring men, women, and kids to our office. How much do you know? Can you answer these questions?

True or false: Only women get bunions and hammertoes.

False. Fashion footwear choices put women at higher risk of these foot deformities, but anyone can get a bunion or a hammertoe. Your podiatrist has options for treatment, including custom orthotics for cushioning and support.

True or false: I’m not old enough to see a podiatrist.

False. Your foot doctor is a medical specialist with years of education, including a hospital residence. They are experts in all illnesses and injuries to the feet, ankles, and lower legs and treat men, women, and children of all ages.

True or false: If I need an operation on my foot, I should see a surgeon.

False. An expert podiatrist performs foot and ankle surgery as part of their practice and is the best-qualified person to help you.

True or false: The skin on my feet is different from the skin on the rest of my body.

False. All the issues that can affect your skin – including skin cancer – can affect your feet. Other unique problems to your feet can occur as well, including athlete’s foot and other fungal infections. Report any redness, itching, flaking, or scaling to your podiatrist without delay.

True or false: Medical conditions that affect my body don’t harm my feet.

False: Any condition that affects your body can affect your foot health. Some, such as cardiovascular illness and diabetes, can pose particular risks to the feet.

True or false: Foot pain is a normal part of aging.

False! While it’s true some conditions, such as plantar fasciitis, a painful inflammation of soft tissue in the foot, become more common with age, foot pain is neither unavoidable nor untreatable. Your podiatrist can diagnose and treat your discomfort, often with non-invasive options.
