Keep Feet and Ankles Safe From Dangerous UV Rays
July is UV Safety Awareness Month and a perfect time for Middlesex County podiatrists Dr. Jason Grossman and Dr. Paul A. Osemene to remind you that skincare doesn’t stop at the knee. It’s important to take steps to protect feet, ankles, and lower legs from the sun’s dangerous UV rays.
Any time you’re going to be outside, you should cover the skin of the feet. If possible, wear socks and closed shoes. If that’s not practical, for example, at the beach, be sure to use plenty of sunscreen with an SPF of at least 50. Apply all over the feet and ankles, even between the toes, and often reapply, especially after swimming or exercise.
Another important step you can take to avoid skin cancer of the foot is to become familiar with their appearance. Check feet often for signs of skin cancer, take note of any new moles, and keep the ABCDE’s of melanoma in mind:
A is for asymmetry. Typically, you should expect any mole to be symmetrical. Report irregular shapes to your doctor.
B is for border. The edges of your mole should be crisp.
C is for color. Take note of any mole with an unusual hue that is not typical for your skin.
D is for diameter. A mole that is larger than the pink eraser on the end of a pencil is cause for concern.
E is for evolving. Is your mole changing? Growing? Talk to your doctor about accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
