Keep Feet and Ankles Safe at Barbecues and Other Outdoor Events
Summer’s here, and, like many Advanced Feet and Ankle Care patients, you’re probably back in the swing of things, enjoying safe outdoor events with family and friends. Those reunions, concerts, barbecues, and other activities are fun, but they can pose some risks for feet and ankles. It’s important to know what can go wrong so be sure to take steps to keep yourself safe and healthy. Here are some tips from Middlesex County podiatrists Dr. Jason Grossman and Dr. Paul A. Osemene:
Avoid ankle sprain and other foot and ankle injuries. Be sure to enjoy athletics on level playing fields and to wear appropriate footwear for each sport. If your sneakers are more than six months old, or if they’ve logged more than 500 road miles, it’s time to consider replacing them.
Will you be responsible for cooking the food on the grill? A burn on the foot is very painful. Any time you’re around a fire, whether at the grill or the fire pit, closed shoes are a must.
Treat injuries with prompt on-site care. Pack a foot first aid kit containing instant ice packs, antibiotic ointment, and an assortment of bandages, including a compression wrap. Tweezers can help remove splinters, insect stings, and more.
Be sure to apply sunscreen to your feet any time you are barefoot. The skin on your feet is as vulnerable to sunburn and skin cancer as the skin anywhere on your body.
The best way to keep feet and ankles healthy and ready for summer activities is to visit podiatrists like Jason Grossman, DPM, and Paul A. Osemene, DPM. With years of specialized training and experience, your podiatrist is a medical expert and the best-qualified doctor to care for this part of your body.
