Resolve to Take Care of Feet and Ankles in 2022

The new year is almost here, and many people are making their list of resolutions for 2022. Are you among them? As you consider the things you’d like to continue and those you’d like to change in the new year, Middlesex County podiatrists Dr. Jason Grossman and Dr. Paul A. Osemene encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity to consider your feet, ankles, and lower legs. Take steps toward improved foot health in the new year. Here are some suggestions:

  1. Get to know your feet. Painful deformities such as bunions and hammertoes often appear first as changes to the foot shape. Itching, scaling, flaking, or red skin might indicate Athlete’s foot or another infection. Report anything unusual to your foot doctor without delay.

  2. The feet should not hurt! Foot pain calls for a visit to the podiatrist’s office, mainly if it follows a spill. Falling is a common cause of foot and ankle injuries.

  3. Are you still wearing high heels regularly? The new year is a great time to consider retiring them or at least saving them for special occasions. High heels are directly responsible for many foot health issues, from ankle sprains to ingrown toenails.

  4. Stick to your other resolutions. Quit smoking. Eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean protein, whole grains, and calcium-rich dairy foods. Exercise regularly. Taking these steps can help you maintain moderate weight, improve cardiovascular health, and keep bones strong, all of which will benefit foot and ankle health.

  5. See your foot doctor for regular care. With years of education and experience, your podiatrist is a medical specialist and the best-qualified doctor to care for this part of your body with careful examination, accurate diagnosis, and effective treatment.
