Five Ideas for Family Fun

As the days have turned into weeks and the weeks into months, the novelty of staying at home has worn off for many families. Kids are bored and cranky. Adults are feeling a bit frayed around the edges. What can you do to find some new fun together as a long summer looms? Here are five ideas from Middlesex County podiatrist Dr. Jason Grossman:

1.      So you’ve watched your fill of Netflix, Hulu, and On-Demand movies? Dig a little deeper. Share a childhood favorite film or series with your kids. Have they ever seen the Back to the Future trilogy or Welcome Back, Kotter? Much of the entertainment that you remember fondly is available online, often with little or no fee attached.

2.      Order a new board game. Try one that your family has never played together. Check the reviews to make sure it’s age-appropriate.

3.      Schedule a front porch photo session. Many local photographers are using long lenses to take family portraits and commemorate this time together.

4.      Host a weekly zoom Trivia match for your extended family and friends. Take turns writing the questions and acting as Quiz Master.

5.      Get outside. Research local spots that you’ve never explored. The weather has been great. Take a walk or hike together. Outdoor recreation is great for your heart and lungs, and also offers benefits to the bones, muscles, and soft tissues of the feet, ankles, and lower legs. It won’t even feel like exercise! Remember to make it even more fun for everyone by including the dog if you have one.
