You Can Enjoy a Spa Pedicure at Home
Has it been months since you were able to relax at your favorite salon or spa, sitting back and enjoying a professional pedicure? While this might not be at the top of your list of worries these days, it’s still a valid concern. Healthy toenails are critical to good foot health. Taking care of them appropriately can prevent ingrown toenails, toenail fungus, and more.
Here are some home pedicure tips from Middlesex County
podiatrist Dr. Jason Grossman:
1. Soak feet in a basin of warm water to soften nails and skin. If you’re inclined, a few drops of lavender or another essential oil can make it feel like you’re being pampered.
2. Use the appropriate implements to care for nails. Trim straight across with a clipper, not scissors. File any rough edges with an emery board. Don’t cut cuticles; rather, push them back with an orange stick wrapped in cotton.
3. Are calluses making you uncomfortable? Your foot doctor can provide the best treatment. Until your next appointment, do not attempt to remove them with a grater or razor at home! This can lead to nicks, cuts, and infection. Instead, rub gently with a pumice stone.
4. Apply moisturizer to your feet, not only after your pedicure but every day. This will reduce your risk of painful heel cracks. Moisturizer is especially important for people with diabetes or illnesses that compromise your immune system and make it harder than usual to battle infections.
5. When you’re done with your pedicure, put on socks and a pair of slippers or shoes, even indoors. Walking barefoot can lead to tripping or falling, especially when your feet have moisturizer on them. Foot and ankle injuries can result. If you apply polish to toenails, allow it to dry completely before covering your feet.
