Bouncing Back After Injury

Sprains, fractures, and other foot and ankle injuries are common this time of year as many Advanced Feet and Ankle Care patients ramp up their exercise routines, perhaps to prepare for the coming season, or in an effort to achieve new goals in the new year. With years of specialized training and experience, a podiatrist like Dr. Jason Grossman is an expert in treating all sports-related injuries, as well as those caused by falls or other incidents. Most will even perform foot and ankle surgery when necessary. But the recovery from an injury or surgery will take time and effort on your part.

Here are some tips to help:

1.      Take any medications as prescribed. Use any assistive walking devices that have been provided by your podiatrist.

2.      Has your doctor told you that RICE (rest, ice, compression, and elevation) will help you get well? Take this suggestion and any other recommendations seriously. Following your doctor’s plan will ensure a swift and complete recovery.

3.      Make sure that your athletic footwear is in good condition. Sneakers should be replaced at least once each year or if they’ve logged 500 road miles.

4.      Get in the habit of warming up and cooling down with gentle stretches before and after any exercise.

5.      If your foot doctor has fitted you with custom orthotics for cushioning and support, use them every time you exercise. They will help correct any posture or gait issues that can contribute to reinjury.

6.      Be patient. Recovery takes time. You’re not going to be able to return to your regular exercise program immediately. Gradual re-entry will be necessary.

Of course, the best way to prevent and heal any injuries to your feet, ankle, and lower legs is to see your podiatrist regularly. At every visit, s/he will conduct a thorough examination, arrive at a specific and accurate diagnosis, and work with you to create an individualized and effective plan for treatment and ongoing care.
