Do you have plans to celebrate Valentine’s Day soon? Many Advanced Feet and Ankle Care enjoy this holiday, taking the opportunity to show some love to family, friends, and that special person in your life. Dr. Jason Grossman recommends that you also take the opportunity to say Happy Valentine’s Day to yourself…specifically to your feet! How?

Here are three good ideas:

1.      Diet and exercise are critical to good health. Be sure that your daily meal plan includes plenty of calcium, which will protect bones from osteoporosis, and dangerous weakening that can result in fractures and other foot and ankle injuries. You can find calcium in dairy foods (choose low-fat options!); leafy green vegetables like spinach and kale, and fish eaten with their bones intact, including sardines and anchovies.

2.      Like any relationship, your relationship with your feet will benefit from attention. Inspect feet daily. Take note of any changes, especially changes to their shape, which might indicate the formation or bunions or hammertoes. Is skin red, itchy, scaly, or flaky? Fungal infection might be setting in. Toenails turning yellow or white can be the onset of toenail fungus. Report anything out of the ordinary to your podiatrist right away.

3.      Cushioning and support, the correction of an issue that affects posture or gait, or sports medicine treatment are just a few of the many reasons that podiatrists prescribe orthotics. If your doctor has recommended these custom shoe inserts, be sure to use them every day. They will be effective in reducing your foot pain.

Of course, the best way to say Happy Valentine’s Day to your feet is with a visit to your podiatrist. Whether you’re experiencing an issue that has caused concern, or you just want to keep feet healthy for a lifetime, your podiatrist will examine your feet, ankles, and lower legs, diagnose any existing or potential problems, and work with you to create an effective plan for treatment and any necessary ongoing care.
