Protect Feet and Ankles During Winter Sports
The holiday season is here, and many families will be celebrating by exchanging gifts designed to encourage participation in winter sports like skiing, hockey, and ice skating. Is yours one of them? Winter sports are excellent, healthy ways to enjoy time together outdoors. However, they do pose some risks to feet and ankles. Middlesex County podiatrist Jason Grossman, DPM, has some thoughts about keeping your family safe as you enjoy this fun time of year:
Proper fit is essential. Whether you’re investing in skates, ski boots, or other gear, make sure everything is the right size. Take the time to go to a retailer and have your feet professionally measured. Avoid the temptation to buy oversized items that kids can “grow into.” Items that are too big do not provide adequate support and can contribute to sprained ankles and other foot and ankle injuries.
Don’t forget socks. Wool socks will do a better job of insulating feet, and wicking moisture than cotton socks do. It is essential for family members living with diabetes, making it hard to perceive cold and discomfort. Plus, they make great stocking stuffers.
Take a foot first aid kit with you when you head out to the rink or the slopes. Be sure to include antibiotic cream, bandages, toenail clippers, tweezers, over-the-counter analgesic and anti-inflammatory medication, and a pair of clean, dry socks for everyone.
Make sure your feet are in excellent health before the big day. Schedule a visit with your foot doctor. Your podiatrist is a medical specialist with years of education and experience and the best-qualified doctor to care for your family’s feet, ankles, and lower legs.
