Say No to Summer Foot and Ankle Injuries
Summer is here, and so is pool season. Swimming in the pool is one of the most anticipated summertime activities, not only because it’s fun, but it’s also excellent for your health. Whether taking a dip or laying out poolside, staying safe is important.
Here are some top recommendations for avoiding injuries during your relaxing pool day!
Avoid Slips
If you’re not careful, a speedy walk around the pool can seriously injure yourself or others. Pool decks can get very slippery, so it’s important to take your step slow and avoid bumping into others.
When your ankle moves unnaturally, it can lead to an ankle sprain. If you think you experienced this injury, contact your podiatrist.
Protect your feet from injury by wearing the proper shoes; flip-flops are not the best pool shoes.
Pay attention to your surroundings. If an area looks wet at your local public pool, alert the pool attendant to protect others from falling.
Ditch Infections
Taking a dip at your local public pool might be a fun way to spend your weekend, but it can have some unfortunate consequences. If you're not careful, fungal toenails, plantar warts, or athlete’s foot might get the best of you!
Take proper care of your feet after your pool day –wash and dry them thoroughly after your swim.
Keep your feet covered to limit exposure to germs.
Never walk barefoot; avoid pool days if you have large wounds.
Don’t Skip Sunscreen
If you are out at the pool, so is the sun. Protect your skin by wearing sunscreen and applying it regularly. Read the directions carefully and check the expiration date. Expired sunscreen won’t work!
Apply sunscreen to your feet and ankles.
