10 Tips for Safe Summer Running
Do you enjoy spending time outdoors, even in the hot summer months? Many people take advantage of the longer days to mow the lawn, take a swim, go for a run, or play sports before or after work. Exercising in the fresh air is a great joy for many people, but it’s important to take active steps to stay safe. Here are ten tips for you from podiatrists Dr. Jason Grossman and Dr. Paul A. Osemene:
Hydrate! Be sure to drink plenty of water before, during, and after an outdoor workout.
Be flexible. If it’s hot in the morning, but a midday storm is expected to break the heat, consider shifting your workout to later in the day in order to take advantage of cooler temperatures.
Dress appropriately for the weather. Look for exercise clothing that is lightweight and wicks moisture but provides enough coverage to prevent sunburn.
Take a break when you need to. If you feel yourself overheating, seek shade or head inside for a while.
Beware of blisters. Make sure your socks offer plenty of protection from friction. If you notice a blister developing, cushion the area with moleskin. Remember never pop a blister. See your podiatrist for care.
Sneakers should be in good condition and provide excellent cushioning and support. If it’s been more than a year since you replaced your exercise footwear, or if they’ve seen more than about 500 road miles, it’s time for a new pair.
Foot pain doesn’t know what month it is. If your podiatrist has prescribed orthotics, be sure to keep them in your shoes when you exercise, regardless of the season.
Keep feet free from athlete's foot and other fungal infections by spraying shoes with a antimicrobial product after exercising.
Prevent ankle sprain and other foot and ankle injuries. Be sure to run on flat terrain and watch where you’re going. Try not to run after dark if you can help it.
Stay safe from skin cancer of the foot. Apply a high-SPF sunscreen any time you’ll be in the sun.
