Is It Time for New Sneakers?
Spring is fast approaching, which means that many men, women, and kids are getting ready to resume outdoor exercise. It’s almost time for walking, running, tennis, team sports, and more. No matter what kind of activity you enjoy in the fresh air, it’s important to ensure your footwear is in good condition and keeps your feet and ankles healthy. Do you know what to look for and when it’s time for a trip to the shoe store? Here are some tips from Middlesex County podiatrists Dr. Jason Grossman and Dr. Paul A. Osemene:
Replace athletic shoes at least once a year or after 500 road miles, whichever comes first. For maximum impact, inspect footwear carefully before the season begins and replace them whenever you notice a collapse of arch support or other cushioning.
Make sure the shoes really fit! You might think you know what size you need, but foot length and width can change. If it’s been more than a year since your feet were measured, ask for a professional fitting. There is a link between properly fitted shoes, painful blisters, and foot deformities, including bunions and hammertoes.
If you’ll be playing basketball or your doctor has told you that you have weak ankles, prevent ankle sprain with a mid-height or high-top pair of sneakers.
Do feet hurt when you stand, walk, or run? Talk to your podiatrist about orthotics, custom inserts to provide additional cushioning and support.
Most important of all is this: keep exercising! Regular exercise is the best thing you can do to improve and protect overall health. Whether you enjoy a stroll around the block or a long run, you will boost cardiovascular health, maintain a healthy weight, lower your risk of diabetes and other illnesses, and reduce the likelihood of foot and ankle injuries by strengthening bones. If foot pain makes it hard for you to enjoy physical activity, see your foot doctor without delay. Your podiatrist is a medical specialist with years of education and experience and is the best-qualified doctor to care for this part of your body.
