Three Foot-Healthy Things to Do with Dad

All across the country, families will be celebrating Father’s Day this weekend. There will be cards, gifts, and cookouts galore. And, sure, you can give Dad another t-shirt, but how about thinking out of the box this year and giving him a gift that will improve his daily comfort by improving foot health? Here are three ideas from Middlesex County podiatrists Dr. Jason Grossman and Dr. Paul A. Osemene:

  1. Make a picnic and invite Dad for a hike. Whether you take a short walk on level ground or a longer trek on a trail or up a hill, you will receive numerous health benefits. Bones will strengthen through the weight-bearing exercise, muscles and soft tissues will be stretched, and your cardiovascular system will have a workout.

  2. Take a look at Dad’s shoes. Has he been wearing the same sneakers since the last century? Footwear should provide the cushioning and support needed to make it through the day comfortably. Sneakers and shoes should be free from rips or tears, and the soles should be in good condition to ensure stability. If it’s time for a replacement, head to a shoe store where a professional can measure Dad’s feet – foot size changes with age – and make recommendations for a perfect fit.

  3. If Dad is still having a hard time standing, walking, or exercising comfortably, it’s time to talk to his podiatrist. A foot doctor will examine Dad’s feet, diagnose any existing or developing illnesses and injuries, and work with him to create a plan for treatment and any necessary ongoing care. You can often resolve common issues such as bunions and hammertoes without foot and ankle surgery. Non-invasive options include medications, physical therapy, and custom shoe inserts called orthotics.

This year, give Dad what he needs to ensure good foot health for a lifetime. Help him schedule a visit with Jason Grossman, DPM, and Paul A. Osemene, DPM.
