Doctors and patients nationwide – including Middlesex County podiatrists Dr. Jason Grossman and Dr. Paul A. Osemene will be taking note of Men’s Health Month in June. Good health begins at the feet! This blog post is for you, men, and anyone with a man in their life. Here are some tips to keep you feeling great from head to toe:

Wash feet daily with soap and water. Dry thoroughly, especially between the toes, to reduce the risk of fungal infections such as Athlete’s Foot. If you shower away from home, such as at the gym, be sure to wear an inexpensive pair of sandals to create a barrier between your feet and public surfaces. It is the best way to prevent plantar warts and other communicable infections.

Your feet shouldn’t hurt. No matter your age, any foot pain should be considered serious. Take particular note of heel pain, which can indicate plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendinitis and discomfort after a fall, which might mean you have sustained a foot or ankle injury.

Be diligent in nail care. Trim toenails carefully with a special clipper and trim straight across. Rounding the corners can lead to ingrown toenails.

Partner with your health care team. See your doctors – including your podiatrist – annually for preventative care. It is especially important if you have been diagnosed with a chronic illness like cardiovascular disease or diabetes. With years of specialized training and experience, including a hospital residency, your podiatrist is a medical expert and the best-qualified doctor to care for this part of your body. Your visit with your podiatrist will begin with a thorough examination of your feet, ankles, and lower legs. It will include a diagnosis of any existing or potential problems and a plan for treatment and ongoing care.
