Each year, May is designated Arthritis Awareness Month. How much do you know about this degenerative disease? Here are ten facts about arthritis that Middlesex County podiatrists Dr. Jason Grossman and Dr. Paul A. Osemene would like to bring to your attention:

1.  Arthritis is not just a single disease. There are over 100 varieties of arthritis! It’s a catch-all term referring to inflammation and pain at the joints.

2. The most common type of arthritis is called osteoarthritis. It occurs when the cartilage between your bones wears away over time, and the bones rub against each other.

3. One in four adults in America lives with arthritis. It includes men and women of all ages. Even children can occasionally be affected by arthritis.

4. Common characteristics of arthritis are pain, swelling, stiffness, and limited range of motion.

5. Arthritis can develop in any joint in your body.

6. With 26 bones and 33 joints in each of your feet, they are particularly vulnerable to arthritis pain.

7. Arthritis pain can make it challenging to wear shoes, stand, walk, exercise, or engage in daily activities.

8. Untreated arthritis can result in permanent, visible changes to the body. It can include knobby fingers and misshapen toes.

9. With years of specialized training and experience, your podiatrist is the best-qualified doctor to diagnose and treat arthritis in your feet and ankles.

10. Your foot doctor has many non-invasive treatments for arthritis from which to choose. These include over-the-counter and prescription medication, physical therapy, and custom orthotics for cushioning and support.

You don’t have to suffer from foot pain. Our doctors are experts who will examine your feet and ankles, arrive at a specific and accurate diagnosis of your issue, and then work with you to create an effective and individualized plan for treatment and any appropriate ongoing care.
