Make Food Choices with Foot Health in Mind

March is National Nutrition Month. It’s an excellent time to examine your diet and make some changes for good health. When you eat for optimal health, feet and ankles benefit; here are two important facts that Middlesex County podiatrists Dr. Jason Grossman and Dr. Paul A. Osemene want you to know:

Some diseases like diabetes, a whole-body illness that poses specific risks to foot health, and gout, characterized by attacks of severe foot pain, are directly related to your diet. Reduce your risk by eating a healthy diet. What should that include? Aim for plenty of:

  • lean protein from sources like white fish and chicken breast.

  • colorful fruits and vegetables. Try to “eat a rainbow” every day!

  • whole grains such as brown rice.

  • new healthy foods. Variety is indeed the spice of life. Try something you’ve read about but never tasted, perhaps a vegetable like bok choy or a grain like quinoa.

When you eat foods loaded with calcium, you protect bone health and reduce your risk of osteoporosis, a dangerous weakening of the bones that can cause foot and ankle injuries. Where will you find that calcium? Look for it in:

  • low-fat dairy foods, including milk, cheese, and yogurt.

  • dark green leafy vegetables such as spinach.

  • small fish eaten with their bones intact, like sardines and anchovies.

Maintaining a healthy weight can improve overall health and wellness, mood, sleep habits, and more. It can also positively impact foot health by reducing the overall stress on bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and other soft tissues. Are you worried about the effect that your diet might be having on your foot health, or do you have another concern about the wellness of your feet, ankles, or lower legs? A visit with your foot doctor is in order.  Your podiatrist is a medical expert and the best-qualified doctor to care for this part of your body.
