By mid-March, many people have their eyes on spring and are getting ready to head back outside for outdoor exercise and family fun. This year, it seems even more essential, as we continue to limit our interactions with others and the restricted list of options due to COVID-19 precautions. If you are getting ready to walk, run, play sports, or hike outside in the coming months, now is the perfect time to give some thought to your footwear. Good choices can keep feet and ankles safe and healthy all year round. Here are some suggestions from Middlesex County podiatrists Dr. Jason Grossman and Dr. Paul A. Osemene:

  • If it’s been more than a year since your last professional shoe fitting, put on your mask and head to a brick-and-mortar store to be sure you’re purchasing the correct size. Foot size changes as we age. Kids can grow up to a half size every few months!

  • Speaking of kids, it can be tempting to purchase their shoes at a second-hand store, but our doctors caution against this. Waring of cushioning and support and infectious agents can be present.

  • Be sure to purchase quality sneakers that offer great support. It can help prevent ankle sprain and other foot and ankle injuries.

  • If foot pain from plantar fasciitis or another source makes it hard for you to wear shoes, walk, or run comfortably, talk to your doctor about orthotics, custom inserts that can make any pair of sneakers even more comfortable.

Once you get your new sneakers, wear them often! Head outside for a run, or just take a walk around the block. The bones, muscles, and soft tissues of your feet and ankles will benefit with every step.

Everyone – men, women, and kids of every age – should be seen by a podiatrist at least once a year. It is the best way to keep feet and ankles in excellent health.
