Preventing and Treating Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are a common complaint and a reason that men, women, and children visit Middlesex County podiatrists Dr. Jason Grossman and Dr. Paul A. Osemene.  Plantar warts are typically painless and a minor inconvenience, but they are also extremely contagious. You should bring this to the attention of your podiatrist without delay. How much do you know about this common condition of the feet?

A strain of the human papillomavirus causes plantar warts. The virus enters the body through small nicks and cuts in the skin and then causes an explosive growth of cells in a small area. It creates a wart, a raised bump that is easy to see and feel. Sometimes a wart might multiply and spread, creating a cluster, especially on the bottom of the foot.

The virus that causes warts thrives in warm, moist environments such as pool decks, locker rooms, and public showers and spreads from person to person. You can keep yourself safe by wearing an inexpensive pair of slippers or sandals if you are in such areas. If you go to a nail salon for pedicures, bring your tools and insist on a new basin liner each time.

If you notice a spot that you suspect is a wart or any other change to the skin condition on your feet, you should not attempt any at-home treatment. These so-called solutions, often found on the internet, can often cause burns or other problems that lead to infection, further compounding the situation. Instead, schedule a visit with your foot doctor. With years of specialized education and experience, your podiatrist is the best-qualified doctor to diagnose and treat your plantar warts or any other injury to or illness of your feet, ankles, and lower legs.
