Three Common Causes of Foot Pain
There are so many reasons that bring patients to the Advanced Feet and Ankle Care office in Middlesex County – everything from foot and ankle injuries to preventative diabetic foot care and more. One of the most common reasons men, women, and children visit an experienced foot doctor like podiatrists Dr. Jason Grossman, and Dr. Paul A. Osemene is foot pain. Of course, while there are as many reasons for discomfort as there are people, some occur more frequently than others. Here are some of the most common causes for you to be aware of:
1. Bunions: Known medically as hallux valgus, a bunion occurs when the joint where the big toe meets the foot becomes misshapen. You might notice a bony protrusion on the inner edge of the foot, along with pain, swelling, redness, and difficulty wearing shoes.
2. Like a bunion, a hammertoe occurs when tendons that connect one of your toes to the muscles supporting it begins to shorten, causing the toe to rise up and out of line with the others. That toe might curl, and you might experience discomfort if you try to straighten it, or the opposite might be the case: you may find that your toe becomes rigid and hard to bend.
3. If your foot pain tends to be concentrated in the heel and more severe first thing in the morning, you may have developed a case of plantar fasciitis, an uncomfortable inflammation of the soft tissue that spans the length of the foot from the heel to the toes.
Your podiatrist has treatment options for foot pain. While foot and ankle surgery is sometimes the most appropriate course of action, you can rest assured your doctor will also consider non-invasive approaches, including medication, physical therapy, and custom orthotics for cushioning and support.
