Scrub Up for Global Handwashing Day!
October 15 is Global Handwashing Day and a significant time for Middlesex County podiatrists Dr. Jason Grossman and Dr. Paul A. Osemene to remind you that effective handwashing is the best way to stay safe from a host of illnesses, including plantar warts, toenail fungus, and other infections of the feet. As handwashing rates go up, the transmission rates for everything from skin infections to winter colds and flu go down. Even your feet will benefit when you remember to wash often.
When should you wash your hands?
When you come home after spending time in public places.
Before and after preparing food or eating.
After using the restroom, helping a child or another adult use the toilet, or changing a diaper.
Before and after caring for an ill or injured person.
After blowing your nose.
After touching garbage.
After petting an animal.
How should you wash your hands?
Wet your hands with running water.
Use plenty of soap. Any kind will do.
Rub your hands together and spread the soap all over the palms, backs of the hands, between the fingers, and under the nails. Scrub this way for at least 20 seconds. Not sure how long 20 seconds is? It’s about the same amount of time it takes to sing Happy Birthday (in your head if you’re in public!) twice.
Rinse well.
Dry your hands with a clean towel or allow them to air dry.
If you’re in a public restroom, be sure to use a paper towel to open the door to prevent contaminating your hands with anything that might be lurking on the doorknob.
