Tips for Back to School Shoe Shopping

It’s that time of year – kids from coast-to-coast are going back to school, even if many of them are doing school from home instead of in a classroom – and they’re going to need new shoes, sneakers, and boots in the months ahead. It’s important to select footwear that will support the health and safety of children’s feet, ankles, and lower legs. Here are five tips from Middlesex County podiatrist Dr. Jason Grossman to help guide your choices:

1.      When possible and safe, avoid online shopping for children’s shoes. Kids’ feet grow up to a half size every few months. Have them professionally measured before investing in new footwear. Don’t forget to have the width checked, too!

2.      Take your kids shopping in the afternoon when feet are often slightly larger. It will ensure a comfortable fit. If your child uses inserts or orthotics, be sure to bring them with you whenever you shop for shoes.

3.      Don’t buy shoes for the kids to “grow into.” Similarly, don’t buy shoes that need to be “broken in.” Shoes should fit properly right out of the box. Footwear that is too big, too small, or too stiff can cause blisters.

4.      While consignment shops have good bargains, skip the shoe section. Used shoes are often lacking structure and support and could have contamination with bacteria, fungus, and viruses.

5.      Be sure to choose shoes made of natural materials that allow feet to “breathe.” It will minimize the risk of odor and infection.
