Three Bad Foot Health Habits to Quit Today

Like so much about your overall health, many aspects of your foot health are within your control. Of course, accidents can happen, and illness strikes, but are you doing everything you can to reduce your risk of a problem? Many people aren’t even aware of the habits that endanger their feet and ankles. Are you? Here are three suggestions from Middlesex County podiatrist Dr. Jason Grossman to help you stay safe and well:

1.      Get rid of old footwear. Replace your shoes and sneakers regularly. If the laces, cushioning, support, and soles of your everyday shoes aren’t in good condition, it’s time for new ones.  At least once a year or every 500 road miles, athletic shoes should be replaced for maximum performance.

2.      Even as the pandemic continues, you might find yourself spending socially-distanced time around others outdoors at a public pool or alone in a previously-occupied space like a hotel room. The virus that causes plantar warts, the fungus that leads to Athlete’s foot, and other bacteria thrive in such environments. Don’t go barefoot. Think of that footwear as masks for your feet.

3.      Stop ignoring foot and ankle discomfort. Pain is not a normal, unavoidable part of adulthood! It might be the result of foot and ankle injuries, plantar fasciitis, deformities such as bunions or hammertoes, an issue related to posture or gait, or any number of other causes.

A board-certified podiatrist like Jason Grossman, DPM has years of education and experience in the treatment of all injuries and illnesses of the feet, ankles, and lower legs. Your podiatrist will conduct a thorough examination, arrive at an accurate and specific diagnosis, and work with you to create an effective and individualized plan for treatment and ongoing care.
