Prevent Falls to Prevent Foot Injuries
September 22 was Falls Prevention Awareness Day. Every week, Middlesex County podiatrists Dr. Jason Grossman and Dr. Paul A. Osemene see patients who have sustained foot and ankle injuries, including ankle sprain and broken bones due to falls. Taking steps to prevent falls is the best way to reduce your risk of these issues. Here are three things you can do to stay safe:
Be careful at home. Reduce clutter on the floors. Tack down the edges of area rugs or, even better, roll them up completely. Try not to carry much when you go up and downstairs, and always leave one hand free to hold the handrail. Install grab bars in tubs and showers.
Choose footwear carefully. High heel shoes throw the entire body off balance and make it hard to walk. Sandals and other shoes with smooth soles offer no traction, and flip-flops slide right off of feet. Instead of these options, wear comfortable, sensible footwear that helps you stay steady on your feet. Choose sneakers and shoes with a rubber sole and laces or straps for a snug fit.
If flexibility, mobility, or balance is an issue for you, talk to your doctor. Many assistive devices are available to help keep you safe.
Good foot and ankle health are essential to preventing falls, and regular visits with a podiatrist are essential to good foot health. Your podiatrist is a medical specialist with years of education and experience and is the best-qualified doctor to examine, diagnose, and treat any illness or injury to your feet, ankles, and lower legs.
