Increase Your Awareness Around Fungal Infections

This year, the Center for Disease Control’s Fungal Awareness Week begins on September 20. Anyone can get a fungal infection. Fungal-related illnesses are standard on the feet. They can affect both skin and nails. To stay healthy, you must be aware of signs and symptoms to look out for and what steps you can take to prevent many common infections. Here is some information that Middlesex County podiatrists Dr. Jason Grossman and Dr. Paul A. Osemene want to share:

  • Anyone can get a fungal infection.

  • Be alert to signs of fungal infection on the skin, including redness, peeling, itching, and flaking.

  • A fungal infection can occur anywhere on the foot. Some illnesses might appear at the sole or the heel, while others, such as Athlete’s foot, are more commonly seen between the toes.

  • Signs of toenail fungus might include thickening or peeling of the toenails, yellowing, and white spots.

  • Protect yourself from infection by keeping your feet away from things that others have come into contact with. Wear sandals in public showers and on pool decks, slippers in hotel rooms. If you enjoy an occasional spa pedicure, bring your tools and watch for good safety practices. Do not allow the nail tech to scrape your feet with a razor or grater, which can create minor nicks and opportunities for infection. Be sure to wash feet daily and dry carefully, especially between the toes.

If you’re concerned about a fungal infection of the skin or nails on your feet, schedule an appointment with your podiatrist. It is the best way to ensure proper diagnosis and effective care. Most treatments for fungal infections are entirely non-invasive. Initial possibilities include anti-fungal creams and sprays for the skin and laser treatments for nails.
