Show Your Feet Some Love in February

February is the month when men, women, and kids show their affection with cards, flowers, chocolates, and gifts. It’s a fun time to express your love to the people you care about and an excellent opportunity to show some affection to your feet, ankles, and lower legs. Here is a tip to help you from Middlesex County podiatrists Dr. Jason Grossman and Dr. Paul A. Osemene

When was the last time you looked at your feet? Careful inspection is the best way to notice signs of trouble. Changes in the shape of your feet may indicate the development of a painful deformity, such as a bunion or a hammertoe. It’s important to remember that such conditions are easier to treat when caught early.

An unusual texture or appearance of the skin on your feet can indicate something as simple as a fungal infection like Athlete’s foot or something more serious. Conditions such as heart disease or diabetes may initially present as a bluish tone to the color of the feet.

Be sure to take a good look at your toenails occasionally. Have they become thick, white, yellow, or crumbly? You might have developed a fungal infection of the toenails

To inspect your feet, sit in a chair and cross one ankle over the opposite knee. Take off your shoe and sock and have a good look. Check the top, sides, and sole, as well as between the toes. If flexibility makes this hard for you, place a mirror on the floor, hold your foot above it or ask a family member or friend to help.
