April is Foot Health Awareness Month. No doubt, you won’t be commemorating the occasion with fireworks or with cake and ice cream, but there is still plenty you can do to celebrate.

Here are six ideas from Middlesex County podiatrist Dr. Jason Grossman:

1.      People who are overweight or obese are at increased risk of foot health issues. Eat for foot health. Choose a diet rich in lean protein, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Dairy foods and leafy greens will provide calcium, essential for preventing osteoporosis and maintaining bone health.

2.      Exercise regularly. This will keep muscles, bones, and soft tissues strong and healthy while improving balance and stability to reduce the risk of foot and ankle injuries caused by falls. Remember: all exercise is good exercise. Take the dog for a walk and check this one off your list today!

3.      Get tested for diabetes. This illness occurs when the pancreas does not create the amount of insulin necessary to regulate blood glucose levels properly. Negative effects can occur throughout the body. Foot health is, particularly at risk.

4.      Report any itching, redness, or flaking of the skin on your feet to your podiatrist. It is often the first sign of athlete’s foot or another fungal infection.

5.      Don’t ignore foot pain. It is not a normal, unavoidable part of aging. Your podiatrist has a wide range of treatment options to relieve your discomfort, including medication and custom orthotics for cushioning and support.

6.      Bring your child to see your podiatrist. Your foot doctor provides expert care to patients of all ages, from newborns to children, adolescents, adults, and senior citizens. Pediatric foot care is essential to create a foundation for a lifetime of good foot health.
