Five Symptoms to Report to Your Podiatrist

Are you already in the habit of seeing your podiatrist for annual exams? This is the best way to ensure the health and wellness of your feet, ankles, and lower legs. But when should you call your foot doctor’s office and schedule a visit in between those appointments?

Here are five symptoms that you should report immediately:

1.      Foot pain: If it hurts to stand or walk, you may have sustained a foot or ankle injury. Small fractures to the 26 delicate bones in each foot are common, especially after a fall.

2.      Heel pain: Discomfort in the heel, especially first thing in the morning, can be a sign of plantar fasciitis, a painful inflammation of the soft tissue in the sole of the foot.

3.      Numbness: If your foot tingles, or if you feel like it’s hard to perceive sensation, you should see your doctor. This can be a sign of a variety of dangerous conditions, including diabetes, neuropathy, and neuroma.

4.      A change in the shape of your foot: Keep an eye out for one toe rising up an out of line with the others, which may be a hammertoe, or a bump forming where the big toe joins the foot, which might be a developing bunion.

5.      White, yellow, or thickening toenails: These are all symptoms of toenail fungus. Your podiatrist can diagnose and treat the issue.

If you notice a change in the appearance of your foot, ankle, or lower leg, or if you experience pain between annual exams, you should see your podiatrist without delay. Your foot doctor is a medical specialist, and the best-qualified person to examine, diagnose, and treat this part of your body.
