Keep Kids’ Feet Safe on Halloween

After months at home, things are beginning to return to normal for the nation’s children. Most have returned to the classroom, and many towns are moving ahead with trick or treating this year, and the kids are excited about participating in this annual event. There is much to consider when heading out with the little ones. As you prepare to have a great time, be sure you remember to take some simple steps to keep feet healthy. Here are suggestions for your family from Middlesex County podiatrist Dr. Jason Grossman.

  1. Unless your child is going out dressed as a sneaker-wearing athlete, it’s not a good idea to match footwear to the rest of the costume. Allowing children to wear high heels or other shoes that impair their ability to walk can result in foot fractures, sprained ankles, or other foot and ankle injuries. Sensible footwear only, please!

  2. Light the way. Carry a strong flashlight and make sure kids can see where they’re going. Like good shoes, this will also prevent tripping and falling.

  3. Halloween is a special day, and all that candy is part of the fun, but limit your kids’ consumption and think about creating good habits that will prevent excess weight in the long run. Chronic obesity is linked to a host of physical issues, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes. In the feet, obesity can contribute to plantar fasciitis, fallen arches, and more.

Of course, the best thing you can do to make sure your children’s feet are healthy is to schedule an annual visit with a board-certified foot doctor once a year. It is the best way to ensure the diagnosis and treatment of any issues and to prevent future problems.
