Three Foot Health Resolutions You Should Make in 2020

The holidays are over and here we are in the New Year. Many people have made a list of resolutions – things they want to change (or perhaps strive to maintain) in 2020. Have you made a list of resolutions, and is your foot health on it?

Here are three important foot health resolutions recommended by Jason Grossman, DPM:

1.      If you still smoke, make this the year you quit. Not only does smoking increase your risk of cancer, heart disease, and high blood pressure, it’s also implicated in numerous foot health risks including peripheral arterial disease (PAD), chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), and neuropathy. Quitting is hard. Talk to your doctor about medication and other assistance.

2.      There are 26 bones and numerous muscles, ligaments, and other soft tissues in each foot, and they come together in delicate arches that enable you to stand and walk upright without pain. When you are overweight, all of those structures are stressed. Please consider dropping a few pounds in 2020. It doesn’t take any special plan or meetings. Resolve to eat a diet high in whole grains, colorful fruits and vegetables, lean protein sources, and low-fat dairy foods. Daily exercise will support your efforts. Again, nothing fancy! You don’t have to join the gym. Meet a friend for a walk. You’ll both enjoy the opportunity to catch up after the busy holiday season. This resolution is especially critical for people with diabetes which is often related to weight and which poses serious risks to foot health.

3.      See your podiatrist at least once this year. With years of specialized education, a hospital residency, and office experience, your podiatrist is a medical expert and the best-qualified doctor to care for your feet, ankles, and lower legs. At your visit, your foot doctor will conduct a thorough examination, diagnose any existing or potential illnesses or injuries, and work with you to create an effective and individualized plan for treatment and ongoing care.
